Vehicle Tracking With The Use Of Global Positioning Systems

Vehicle tracking technologies are used by an increasing number of companies involved in passenger and freight transport for fleet management functions. GPS vehicle tracking or GPS seguimiento vehiculos as it is called in Spain is the predominant technology utilized in managing fleet operations. The key elements of GPS seguimiento vehiculos are the tracking units which are installed onto the vehicle itself, a server where data from the vehicles are transmitted to, and a software which allows the employer or operator to view these pieces of information. Aside from location, other pieces of vehicle information transmitted by GPS tracking devices include fuel amount, engine temperature, altitude, tire pressure, battery status, and even cumulative idling.

GPS trackers can be used in many ways. The combination of information transmitted to the server allows the fleet owner to perform profiling on his or her employees that are operating the vehicles. Being able to track the location of all vehicles in service allows management to fulfill consumer's varied requirements in a more efficient manner. When utilized in public modes of transportation, it will allow operators to check if the buses are sticking to schedules. These technologies can also be used to initiate changing of destination indicators shown on screens mounted on the bus. Vehicle tracking systems will also set off pre-recorded announcements at or near bus stops which informs commuters of the present and subsequent destination.

Many of these GPS trackers also serve as fuel monitoring systems or sistema de control de combustible as they are called in Spain. Such systems enable management to precisely measure the amount of fuel in the tank at any given time. By presenting data about fueling and draining, sistema de control de combustible are effective in deterring fraud, and to detect and correct incipient system failures that cause fuel wastage.

These GPS trackers will also serve as theft prevention and retrieval devices. In case a thief has taken over a truck, the police simply have to follow the signal transmitted by the truck's GPS tracker so they can relieve the vehicle. Some of these systems even permit management to control the vehicle remotely during emergencies or unauthorized operation such as closing doors or shutting off the engine.

The hospitality sector also utilizes GPS tracking technologies on their vehicles to make their customer service better. For example, there are many luxury hotels that have fitted GPS trackers into their limos and coaches so that they can send the welcoming committee to attend to VIPs as soon as they alight from the vehicle. These technologies are also utilized by fast food chains to monitor their delivery fleet.
