All motorists can find long distances on the road a frustrating and exhausting experience, however truck drivers and heavy duty vehicle's are up and down the country on a daily basis and constantly putting their safety at risk.

Once you set off on any UK motorway it won't be long before you are confronted with flashing signals warning 'Tiredness Kills, Take A Break'. Tiredness causes thousands of accidents on our roads every year, with drivers falling asleep at the wheel accounting for one in five motorway collisions.

Truckers and HGV drivers must ensure they're taking regular breaks throughout the journey to remain alert. The Highways agency recommends stopping at least every two hours so it's a good idea to include this break into your overall time.

This inevitably means you will need to pull into several service stations along your journey, and love them or hate them; they are essential areas for taking a break from the road. However are all of them really that bad? Some have even become tourist attractions and are highly recommended to stop regardless of how you are feeling. Below is a list of the top services in the UK.

    Britain's best service stops
    Tebay Services, Lake District
These services have become so popular with drivers it has even become a tourist attraction to visit while appreciating the picturesque views of Cumbria. The station is locally owned and its design is far from your usual services, looking far more like a rustic cabin. Truckers regularly stop here to enjoy the views and local farm food with over forty different types of meat and cheese to choose from. In the summer the services even holds regular BBQ's.

    Popham Services, Winchester
Last year Popham services Little Chef became the flagship restaurant for the national chain as celebrity chef Heston Blumenthal transformed it for a 21st Century revamp. The food has consistently received excellent reviews as people are invited to try out some rather extraordinary tastes including coq au vin, Hereford Steak and braised ox cheeks.

    Woodwall Services, Sheffield
Taking the bronze medal is Welcome Break's Woodall service station. The chain has maintained a high standard for these particular services and has become a popular destination for late night truckers to enjoy a well earned rest. The food court offers food for every taste from light snacks to a host of fast food outlets including Burger King and McDonalds.
