You will go through many different conditions and situations any time you drive regularly. In particular, you're going to be sharing the road with various types of vehicles and people and this can mean that the unexpected will happen at times. If you are alert to this you'll be able to prevent mishaps from happening and you especially need to take account of the different types of road user and the challenges they can present. We will look at exactly how being accommodating of other people can lower the chances of getting into a car accident.

Cyclists are the very first type of road user we see and there are some common situations that we may find ourselves in with them. As is the way it is with car drivers, you will see cyclists that ride their bike with an awareness for other people on the road and those that do not. A particular circumstance that can be dangerous is during heavy traffic when it becomes harder to see cyclists weaving in and out and nearing you from the rear. Before you switch lanes or pull out, be sure to check your rear view mirror, look over your shoulder and be wary of your car's blind spots. Many cyclists ride together in groups so never overtake them until it is safe and be cautious when you approach them.

Motorcyclists are like cyclists but they are obviously much faster. A lot of motorcyclists will try to drive defensively but there will always be those who want to ride at speed and this can be particularly dangerous when they appear all of a sudden from behind. One of the advantages of operating a motorcycle is the ability to weave in and out of slow moving traffic, so do not ever assume that there is nothing behind you that can overtake your car.

Larger cars and trucks such as lorries and coaches present different problems and you certainly want to avoid accidents with these if you can. Lorries and delivery trucks journey just about everywhere and the driver may have to make unanticipated maneuvers since they may not know where they are going. These lorry drivers are inclined to drive for long hours which makes them tired so you want to be sure that you are not in their blind spot in case they doze off. You may have drivers who are in reality from other countries who are not familiar with the road rules so you need to leave plenty of space between them and you.

Obviously, be even more careful of pedestrians especially around busy areas like schools. It is usually best to drive slowly and intentionally to avoid any accident. Any time you establish the habit of driving with consideration to other road users you can prevent accidents and keep yourself safe on the road.
